Recommendation Report

MEMORANDUM
6 May 2013

TO:                  West Hills High School Senior Class
FROM:             Kylie Brader
SUBJECT:         Recommendation for College Decision

School is almost over and graduation is getting closer by the minute. All of your friends are getting accepted to a university, but where are you going to go? College is a big step in your life and you have to do it right because if you don’t. you’ll regret it. Since you didn’t apply for university in time, you are limited to the local community colleges; Cuyamaca and Grossmont. But which one is better for you? You’re going to need to look at three categories:
1.      Convenience
2.      Classes
3.      Cost

RECOMMENDATION

If you’re looking for language variety, I recommend Grossmont College. This college has many languages from German to Russian. It also has an orchestra, while Cuyamaca does not, but Cuyamaca has a great Spanish and sign-language department. If you are from Santee, Grossmont is the logical choice; it’s close and you’ll be going to class with the people you went to high school with, but if you want to get away from home, Cuyamaca has nice apartments located right next to the campus and also a mall. The atmosphere plays a big part in college choice after all.

DISCUSSION

Convenience
As stated in the recommendation above, convenience all depends on your location. If you live close to Grossmont, then that’s what’s convenient, and vice-versa. But if the colleges offer different programs, then spend a little extra on gas. It is your education after all.

Classes
Overall, both colleges offer about the same classes. If you’re worried about the fact that community college is a down step from university, that you are only going because you couldn’t get into a 4-year institution, think again. For 2 years at community, you’ll be spending less than $3,000 on classes and you’ll even have time to work full-time and you’ll have money to save. If you go to university, it’ll cost you $50,000 plus just for classes. You’re getting the same education, just with less money and debt.

Cost
With both colleges being community, you’re spending the same amount of money for both, so cost isn’t really a big topic up for discussion. It’ll cost, overall, about $7,000 if you’re staying all 4 years, but only about $3,000 for 2 years. If you’re going to transfer, if will cost a lot more, but the cost depends on where your transfer school is and how far away it is.

CONCLUSION

Both colleges are good choices to start off your college life, but if you can’t decide, fill out an application for both and see where it goes from there. The websites are full of helpful information and the applications are free to fill out. You could also drive down to one or the other and walk around to get the feel for the atmospheres, but you better hurry; there are only 2 months left of high school.
